Bringing NGSS Outside: Navigating and Engaging the New Science Standards

  • Adalyn Naka, Program Manager, Education Outside

  • Carson Cornbrooks, Director of Programs, Education Outside

  • Moderator: Elizabeth Esparaza, FoodCorps Service Member, North Coast, CAFF

This session will provide educators with the background knowledge to engage in discussions of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the tools to connect their own curriculum to NGSS to better prepare for the national rollout of these new standards. Specifically, this session provides hands-on outdoor science activities that engage urban youth in the NGSS and prepare them for future participation in STEM lessons and careers. Participants will learn about the components of the NGSS and how they can support science education in the school garden. Specific tools and examples will be provided for engaging the Scientific Practices in outdoor settings, for all elementary students. This session will be geared toward both classroom teachers and informal educators. Participants will engage in a hands-on "Scientific Practices Round-Robin," in which they explore 8 outdoor mini-lessons and discuss in groups to determine how each activity uses a Scientific Practice to engage students.
