Linking the Cafeteria, Classroom and School Garden through California Thursdays

    • Jennifer Gerard, California Food for California Kids Program Director, Center for Ecoliteracy

    • Jonathan Foley, California Thursdays Network Coordinator, Center for Ecoliteracy

    • Moderator: Rosemary Quinn, Program Manager, CAFF

This hands-on workshop provides participants with an overview of how California Thursdays, a collaboration between the Center for Ecoliteracy and 71 participating school districts, is a platform linking the school garden, cafeteria and the classroom. The workshop will showcase a suite of new classroom lessons featuring popular California crops. Participants will engage in experiential activities using the lessons to understand their application across the school campus. The lessons are easily modified for students in different grade levels and can be adapted for various competencies and subjects. The session will also feature Farm Lab, a working certified organic farm and living classroom supporting the Encinitas Union School District. Farm Lab will demonstrate a sample of the California Thursdays lessons, sharing their unique farm-to-school programming and ways they can be adopted at other school districts, regardless of facilities or funding.
