Collective Impact: Growing Success of Smarter Lunchrooms Movement

  • Heather Berkoben, Community Nutrition Adviser, Dairy Council of California

  • Moderator: Allie Hoffman, Program Manager, CAFF

Developed out of the Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics, Smarter Lunchrooms Movement (SLM) is an evidence-based method of promoting healthful eating behaviors using low-and no-cost practices that have proven successful in schools across the country. Over 4.5 million school breakfasts and lunches are served in California each day, creating a significant opportunity to apply the Smarter Lunchroom concepts in school cafeterias.

Learn how the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement (SLM) is improving meal participation and increasing the selection of farm to school products in school lunchrooms across California. Pamela Lambert, director of nutrition services for San Ysidro Elementary School District will share what she has done in her lunchrooms and Heather Berkoben, a Technical Advising Professional for SLM with Dairy Council of California will share her partnerships with San Diego County school districts who have implemented SLM principles and highlight best practices. Network, brainstorm and problem-solve with experienced SLM professionals, leaving feeling empowered to integrate steps to creating the go to eating place on your campus.
