This workshop features a unique collaboration between Davis Farm to School (DF2S), FARM Davis (a Yolo County nonprofit farm) and a 5th Grade elementary school class. We will feature Farm Davis' "Grow & Give" program, which is designed to empower 5th grade students to plan, plant, harvest, prepare and serve an entire meal to Seniors at a low income residence. The program begins in the classroom, where students "create' their meal. Also this is where farming, seasonality and nutrition information is shared and where curricular connections are first made. Students then visit the farm, plant for the meal and begin some advanced preparation. About three months later, students return, harvest, do all the preparations and cooking, then share their meal with senior residents of the care facility. The session will focus on collaborative efforts to sustain such programs, curricular connections to ensure educational content, practical and logistical arrangements of the program, and most of all, the joy that this brings to students, teachers, parents and the seniors who connect with the young chefs over a meal.
