Beyond Local: Using Procurement Data to Inform Ethical Purchasing Decisions

  • Alex Emmott, Farm to School Supervisor, Oakland Unified School District
  • Alexa Delwich, Center for Good Food Purchasing
  • Moderator: Cassandra Spindler, CA FoodCorps Fellow

Join us to learn about a unique partnership between Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and The Center for Good Food Purchasing (CGFP) to guide and evaluate procurement changes over time using metrics in five food system values: local economies, environmental sustainability, valued workforce, animal welfare, and nutrition. OUSD has used metrics measured through the CGFP's Good Food Purchasing Program to make informed procurement decisions and to evaluate the effectiveness of unique Farm to School programs, such as California Thursdays. Hear about the experiences of OUSD, as well as other school districts participating in the Good Food Purchasing Program, including San Francisco and Los Angeles Unified, as you consider ways to incorporate similar strategies, or even adopt the Good Food Purchasing Program in your own district.
